About Me

Hello, my name is Charlene Rogers-Smith, owner of Choose to Shine Counseling and Play Therapy Center. My passion for helping others started when I volunteered to as a student leader to assist children with emotional and physical challenges as a middle schooler.  I owned Rogers Counseling and Play Therapy Center for 12 years until March of 2020 when I took a sabbatical. In August of 2021 I reopened as Choose to Shine Counseling to see clients in person.

During the pandemic, I hosted a dear friend and her husband at my home for her cancer journey at MD Anderson.   Choose to Shine Counseling was opened in memory of my friend who embodied a beautiful spirit in spite of her trials. She left a legacy of helping others develop resiliency in hard times. She loved her family and children and taught me so much. My goal is to carry on her spirit by helping children and families find hope., learn to overcome obstacles, develop resilience, optimism, and perseverance. Everyone has an inner light waiting to shine.

As a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor, I have specialized training to help children and teens using creative and evidence-based approaches for their level of development.  Parents are helped to feel calm and confident. My approach is genuine and compassionate and goal oriented.

When I am not in the office, I enjoy travel, book club, volunteering, skiing and playing with my dog Charlie.

I look forward to meeting you and starting your journey of hope, healing and help for your family.
